Mary Queen of the World Cathedral

Achitecture

This neo-Renaissance Italian cathedral is a scale model of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Its façade includes a series of windows topped by rounded pediments and framed by columns and pilasters. An imposing triangular gable graces the central part of the building. Above the cornice is a long row of statues representing the thirteen patron saints of the parishes of what was then the diocese of Montreal.

Behind this façade, walls of rough or embossed limestone, with dimension stone around the windows, form a cruciform ground plan surmounted by one large and two smaller copper domes.

Inside, a Casavant organ, statues, paintings, and frescos decorate the nave, the magnificent coffered vault, and the gilded bronze neo-baroque baldachin (permanent canopy of state that sits over the altar) designed by architects Arthur Vincent and Joseph Olindo Gratton. The church also has a sanctuary, apse, bishops' mortuary chapel, baptistery, wedding chapel, and memorial chapel.
