John Ostell
1813 - 1892

Architect, surveyor. Among the works completed by John Ostell as surveyor were the first complete plan of the city of Montreal in 1840, and a plan of the Côte-des-Neiges cemetary in 1854. John Ostell was also Montreal's most sought-after architect for the construction of private residences, public buildings (court House, 1850-56), businesses, factories (Redpath Sugar, 1854) and religieous buildings. Notable among his religious works were the church and presbitary of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, 1851-1853. The tomb of Jacques Viger, first mayor of Montreal, was placed in the vaults of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce church in 1858.
