Église La Visitation

Achitecture

Built in keeping with the “Récollect Plan,” the church has no transept and consists of a rectangular nave and choir, a flat chevet and a double sacristy. Previously topped by a single bell tower, the façade was rebuilt in the 19th century, according to plans that the architect Joseph-Omer Marchand proposed to the architect John Ostell for the enlargement of the church. Characterized by baroque and neoclassical architecture, the façade consists of a triangular pediment gate, flanked by two towers, each topped by a spire.

Also worthy of mention is the interior decoration, carried out from 1764 to 1836 by Québec's most talented artists. In the 18th century, the sculptor Philippe Liébert carved the doors of the sanctuary, a portion of the tabernacle for the high altar and the original pulpit, now replaced by the one made by Vincent Chartrand. Another sculptor, Louis-Amable Quévillon, designed many pieces, including the paschal candlestick, the tombs of the three altars and two tabernacles. In the 19th century, David Fleury-David sculpted and decorated most of the interior, including the magnificent vaults with geometric and floral motifs, the altarpiece of the high altar and the entablature. In addition to these ornamental pieces, about 50 classified works of art - silverware, paintings, and furniture - grace the church.
