Moulins de l'île de la Visitation

Achitecture

The dike, which measures 27 by 100 metres, was built by Simon Sicard according to the cofferdam technique, which involves temporarily rerouting the watercourse so that the walls can be built.

Some of the mills were refitted as various needs arose, while others were demolished or burned down. The Maison du Meunier, which still stands, is made of fieldstone with a slightly sloping gabled roof. The building has two stories and a basement, a front veranda and randomly placed windows of various sizes.

In 1998, the Site des Moulins was inaugurated on the dike and its canals. Jean-Louis Beaulieu, the architect for the Montréal Urban Community, consolidated the ruins and made the site accessible by creating paths and adding vegetation and a terrace in a restrained style. Daoust Lestage landscaped the site.
