Maisonneuve market

History

In 1899, plans to build a public market were rejected by Maisonneuve's city council due to lack of funds. The market was finally built fifteen years later, opening its doors in 1914, on land once owned by the Dufresne family. Together with the public bath, the gymnasium, the city hall, fire station #1, the park, and Morgan Boulevard, it formed part of a magnificent urban complex. The market specialized in retail sales and was one of the most important sites in Montreal's east end. It offered stalls for the merchants between 1932 and 1967, when they were demolished. For a while, it served as the meeting place for political gatherings in the east end, attended, for example, by Jean Drapeau and Camillien Houde. It was also lent to various organizations and served as the venue for sports activities.

Suffering from competition from supermarkets and the Central Market, the market closed in 1962, when it was used to house the traffic police department. The market re-opened for a short time in 1980 and then again in 1995. It now has about forty stalls offering all kinds of local and organic produce and hosts various events and festivals during the summer.
