Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge Church

History

When Hochelaga-Maisonneuve entered its industrial phase, many French Catholic workers moved into the neighbourhood. In 1867, a Catholic parish was created between Frontenac, Longue-Pointe (Vimont), and Côte de la Visitation (Rosemont) streets and the river: the Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge-d'Hochelaga. This was one of the first to separate from the Notre Dame parish when Msgr. Bourget asked Rome to divide up the territory controlled by the Sulpicians.

After using a small chapel on the corner of Dézéry and Saint Catherine streets called the Chapelle du courant Sainte-Marie, then the Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge chapel, the parish built a church on land donated by Victor Hudon, Joseph Léveillé, and Gilbert Provost. Inaugurated in 1877, it was renovated in 1890 and 1900 but was burned almost to the ground in 1921. Only the façade survived. A more imposing church was built on the site in 1922-1923 to serve as the “eastern cathedral,” although it was never officially called that name.

Starting in 1937, various repairs and renovations were carried out over the years.
