Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge Church

Achitecture

Starting with the original walls, the architects drew up a rectangular plan with a projecting choir and a semicircular apse. They heightened the church, erected fourteen conical pinnacles on the copper roof, and added an Italian-style bell tower surmounted by an arrow and housing five clocks. The Gothic-style stone façade with three portals represents the Transfiguration: the transfigured Christ, statues of the prophets Moses and Elijah, the inscription “Il fait bon ici,” (The words of Peter: “It is good for us to be here”), a dove symbolizing the Holy Ghost, and the apostles in sculpted medallions.

The splendid Roman-Byzantine interior has three immense cupolas built using a Roman technique. Designed by Venne and carried out by Carli and Petrucci, the frieze in the three-aisled nave, with its series of huge columns forming an arcade leading to the choir, illustrates the apotheosis of the Virgin Mary and evokes important figures in Montreal's history. Venne, Carli, and Petrucci also designed the stone and marble high altar, the two side altars, the choir balustrade, the stone and plaster stations of the cross, and the statues of the twelve apostles. In the 1960s, Guido Nincheri completed the décor with fourteen magnificent stained glass windows.

In 1874, Father Joseph Michaud, a cleric of the Saint-Viateur order and self-taught architect, supervised construction of the Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge church.
