Université de Montréal

History

In 1878, after repeated attempts, Mgr. Bourget succeeded in providing French-speaking Catholics with a university by establishing a branch of Université Laval de Québec in Montreal.

The Université Laval à Montréal was first housed in a building constructed in 1895 on Saint-Denis Street, in the heart of the Latin Quarter, on land donated by the Sulpicians. The building was designed by the architects Maurice Perreault, Albert Mesnard, and Joseph Venne. In time, the polytechnic, veterinary medicine, dental surgery, pharmacy, agriculture, and business studies schools were all affiliated with it.

In 1919, the university became a self-governing and independent institution and was renamed Université de Montréal. The 1895 building burned down the same year.

Space limitations and the appeal of the mountain lead to the university being moved to Côte-des-Neiges on the site of a former limestone quarry donated by the City of Montréal. The new campus was officially inaugurated in 1943, fifteen years after construction, slowed by the Depression, had begun.

Renamed the Roger Gaudry Building in 2003, the central building of the Université de Montréal is now home to many schools and faculties associated with all fields of knowledge, in addition to being affiliated with various research institutions.
