F.A.C.E. School

Achitecture

This imposing building is one of few neoclassical inspired school buildings in Montreal. Its Beaux-Arts architectural style was very much in vogue at the beginning of the 20th century. The caryatids, yellow brick and terracotta ornaments are among many elements which contribute to the refinement of this place of learning designed by the most famous architects in Canada at the time, the brothers Edward and W. S. Maxwell, who also designed the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

In 1914, the building was designed in the form of an H so as to provide one wing for boys and another for girls, each with its own separate entry. Extracurricular activities such as choir took place in the central block. The auditorium, hall and foyer, gymnasia and library were among its noteworthy interior features. The swimming pool was the first to be built in a Montreal school. Nearby was a shooting gallery, where 16 marksmen could practice at a distance of 25 yards.

The auditorium, one of the most interesting examples in Montreal schools of the period, still retains almost all of its original wood ornamentation. The basement still houses an unusual technological heritage: old boilers that served to heat the building early in its history. Even the design of the staircases is unique, with their double flights - one going up and one going down - that don't intersect.
