Institut des Sourdes-Muettes

A building of exceptional heritage value, the Institution des Sourdes-Muettes is a fine example of architectural development spanning several decades. Although constructed in seven phases, during a total of 73 years, the building's design is well-balanced. Harmonious features include construction holding to an H-shaped footprint, continuity of volumes and choice of materials.

The work of Father Joseph Michaud, of the Clercs de Saint-Viateur, the building retained elements of the Second Empire Style, in particular the mansard roof and projecting pavilions. This style had become popular in Montreal during the 1870s. Michaud inset a projecting entrance portico in the centre of the façade, decorating with pilasters to add monumentality. The dome topping the roof is a small-scale version of that of Marché Bonsecours and Hôtel-Dieu. The windows of each storey are smaller than the ones below, a common design practice for more than 30 years. The building retains its superb exterior wood galleries, a reminder of its original use as a convent.

The buildings are constructed mostly of rough-hewn Montreal greystone, ornamented with cut stone. The central chapel alone makes the complex worth visiting. Among other interesting features is a painting by Georges Delfosse depicting the miraculous journey of the image of Our Lady of Good Counsel, to whom the chapel is dedicated.

The interior of the Institution des Sourdes-Muettes is relatively well preserved and of particular interest for its woodwork. At the Berri Street entrance, a stairway in golden oak with red oak railings is particularly impressive.
