Place Ville Marie

Achitecture

Place Ville Marie was built in the international style. Its 41-storey cruciform office tower was built on a concrete foundation surmounted by concrete colonnades, metal girders, and aluminium and glass curtain walls. Its architectural form is crisp and unadorned, designed to make the most of the available light.

In addition to the tower, the complex includes three other buildings surrounding a raised public square with huge skylights and offering a view of Mount Royal and the McGill University campus. An underground walkway links the complex to Central Station and the Queen Elizabeth Hotel as well as to the metro system and many nearby buildings and businesses, including an underground parking lot, the Ville Marie shopping mall (on the street side) and the offices of the Royal Bank of Canada. Built before the metro,, the tunnel was the beginning of Montreal's underground pedestrian network.

The rotating rooftop beacon, symbol of Place Ville Marie, belongs to the Royal Bank of Canada and can be seen for 30 kilometres in all directions.
