Place des Arts

Achitecture

The complex features modern materials in a classical, formalistic structure: exterior decorative panels, stained glass mural, exterior colonnade with components of prefabricated concrete, stepped ceilings, and numerous works from renowned artists such as Jordi Bonnet, Louis Archambault, Claude Bettinger, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. Many architects and designers contributed to the accomplishment of this ambitious project.

In addition to the five concert halls linked by an underground mall, the complex includes rehearsal and reception halls, underground parking, a café-bistro, shops, an esplanade, and other services. The fan-shaped Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, with its honeycombed ceiling, is the largest multi-purpose theatre in the country. The Maisonneuve Theatre, a modern-day version of an Italian proscenium theatre, presents small shows or films. The Jean-Duceppe Theatre has a wide stage and long rows of seats, creating an intimate setting. The Elizabethan-style Studio-Théâtre has a small stage surrounded by 138 seats. Finally, the Cinquième Salle has moveable seating, making it possible to create an Elizabethan, Italian proscenium, in the round, or thrust stage as needed.
