Saint Ambroise Church

Achitecture

The Roman-style church combines harmonious proportions with sober ornamentation. Its walls of flat ochre Belden brick are embellished with bands of local marble and a steel and copper roof. Under the rose window in the church's symmetrical façade, the entrance door is flanked by green marble columns, a tympan (architectural panel) decorated with a mosaic made of enamel and gold dust mixed with glue and brushed on paper, a frieze of sculpted panels, and a triangular pediment. An Italian-style bell tower with a square base links the church to the rectory, which mirrors the church's construction on a smaller scale. The interior, built on a steel and concrete framework, boasts a simple yet majestic nave with three bays and an integral chancel. The paneled walls, the openings of white and yellow glass, the oak doors, and the frieze are all worth mentioning. The vault is a thin-shell concrete semi-circular arch, notable for its three flying buttresses. The organ was built by Odilon Jacques of Saint-Hyacinthe.

The church differs from the original plans, which included a nave with five bays and a semi-circular sanctuary flanked by a chapel and a sacristy. These were added in accordance with a simplified plan. The back wall, on the north side, reveals the framework of the building, left unfinished when the original project was abandoned.
